(MINNESOTA) — Kim Potter, the former police officer who shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright, has been arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter.
Wright’s mother, Katie Wright, says she wants “100 percent accountability” in the case proceeding against Potter.
“We’re still never going to be able to see our baby boy,” added Mrs. Wright. “There’s never gonna be justice for us.”
Daunte Wright was shot by Potter, who was employed by Brooklyn Center police and had been a veteran of the force for 26 years, when she allegedly mistook her gun for a Taser.
Potter, 48, made her first appearance in court on Thursday and was later released on $100,000 bond with no conditions.
She is due back in court May 17.
Should Potter be convicted of second-degree manslaughter, she faces a maximum penalty of a $20,000 fine and 10 years in jail.
An investigation into the shooting is still active by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Meanwhile, Attorney Ben Crump and co-counsel Jeff Storms and Antonio Romanucci — who are representing Wright’s family — said Wednesday, “This was no accident. This was an intentional, deliberate, and unlawful use of force.”
“A 26-year veteran of the force knows the difference between a taser and a firearm. Kim Potter executed Daunte for what amounts to no more than a minor traffic infraction and a misdemeanor warrant,” the statement continued. “Kim Potter saw him as expendable. It’s past time for meaningful change in our country.”
