(NEW YORK) — Saturday Night Live recently ran a hilarious sketch about the abandoned hobbies people promised themselves they’d get around to during lockdown, but a new survey suggests Americans really did find ways to keep themselves busy during the pandemic.
In fact, a new non-scientific survey of 2,000 Americans revealed that one third of us did take up a new hobby since the start of the “new normal,” with 94% admitting it helped our mental health.
According to the poll, commissioned by the photo sharing company Mixbook, 93% of respondents said keeping their idle hands busy with new things gave them a sense of purpose, and 75% said their new hobby inspired them to make a life change, like turning their new passion into a new career.
Of those new hobbies, 63% said cooking and baking have gotten them through the pandemic; 51% have been reading; 41% turned to video games; 31% have played board games; 28% say they’ve been meditating; 27% say they’ve started painting and drawing, and 25% say they’ve finally gotten around to printing all the photos they’ve never had time to get off their phones or computer.
Twenty-four percent of the respondents have taken up hiking, sewing, and yoga, while 18% say they’ve started to learn an instrument and 17 percent say they’ve found peace through knitting.
