(NEW YORK) — Not all of us are spending the pandemic locked down at home, binge-watching TV. Some of us are bingeing on nature instead.
The Washington Post reports that sales of camping, hiking and other similar outdoor guides have seen an increase during the COVID-19 lockdown. That’s according to retail book analysts like Kristen McLean of NPD Books, who says sales show “It was a very, very good summer for road trips, camping, driving and closer-to-home travel.”
Top-selling genre books in the U.S. through September include The Camping Logbook and the SAS Survival Handbook: The Ultimate Guide to Surviving Anywhere, according to NPD data.
But all that info about camping and survival doesn’t do you much good without somewhere to practice it. Sales of travel books and guidebooks are up as well, as are maps of national parks and other wilderness and scenic vacation spots, the Washington Post reports, citing other industry experts.
“I think lots of people have been planning, taking or dreaming about road trips while stuck in their house,” says Field Notes president Jim Coudal. “I know I have.”
