(WASHINGTON, D.C.) — It has been nearly five months since the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol, where protestors who belived the latest U.S. election was “stolen” from then-President Donald Trump stormed the campus, broke into political leaders’ offices and even fled with stolen property. 

More than 440 arrests were made in the aftermath and, now, plea discussions appear to be underway.

Prosecutors said during a court hearing Wednesday that some offers will be sent to accused rioters over “the next couple of days.”  More will head out over the course of the following month as trial dates loom near.

An assistant U.S attorney confirmed to ABC News Tuesday that prosecutors obtained the green light by their supervisors to start offering plea deals to certain individuals.

Janani Iyengar, a prosecutor in the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s office, explained, “In terms of the plea offer, we are authorized to be extending offers at this point.”

Iyengar was speaking during the hearing of Couy Griffin, an elected official from New Mexico who founded the group “Cowboys for Trump.”  She is seeking a plea offer for Griffin.

Another protestor potentially receiving a plea bargain soon is Richard “Bigo” Barnett, who was photographed putting his foot on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s desk and allegedly stole a piece of her mail.

Barnett pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him and is currently on home detention after being released from jail by order of a judge.

However, not all rioters are expected to receive or accept plea bargains, as Jacob Chansley — the accuse rioter seen wearing furs and a horn helmet in the U.S. Capitol, said via his attorney that he is “prepared to proceed with trial.”
