Fallen Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick honored in Capitol Rotunda
U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died of injuries sustained during the Capitol building siege on January 6, was honored Tuesday night as his remains lay in honor in the Capitol Rotunda. Sicknick’s remains arrived at 9:30 p.m., with one officer carrying the urn that contained them and another officers carrying an American flag, as dozens of his fellow Capitol Police officers in full dress uniform stood at attention. They later filed past his remains to pay silent tribute. President Biden and first lady Dr. Jill Biden visited the Rotunda at 10:20 p.m. to pay their respects. Members of Congress were allowed to pay their respects Wednesday morning from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., with a congressional tribute scheduled to be held at 10:30 a.m. Sicknick’s remains will be removed from the Rotunda at noon today in a ceremonial departure and interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
Sicknick, 42, is the third Capitol Police officer to lie in honor at the Capitol, joining Officer Jacob Chestnut and Detective John Gibson, who were both killed in the line of duty in 1998. In a statement, the family of Sicknick thanked congressional leaders for “bestowing this historic honor on our fallen American hero.”

The greatest number of reported COVID-19 cases in the U.S. is in California, with 3,355,781 confirmed cases out of a total state population of 39.51 million. This ranks second in the world after England, which has 3,373,085 cases. Texas is third, with 2,431,687 confirmed cases out of a total state population of 29 million.
CDC forecasts up to 534,000 COVID-19 deaths by end of February; says deaths trending downward
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated their forecast for COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. and is now estimating between a total of 496,000 to 534,000 reported fatalities by the week ending February 27. The previous forecast estimated a total of 479,000 to 514,000 deaths by the week ending February 20. There is some good news in that the forecast is trending downward, with the CDC also predicting that “the number of newly reported COVID-19 deaths will likely decrease over the next four weeks,” with between 11,300 to 22,600 new fatalities likely to be reported in that same period.
The Covid Tracking Project also reports a downward trend in deaths, on the heels of downward-trending new cases and hospitalizations over the past two weeks. “7-day average deaths declined more than 10% from last week in 25 states. Only 9 states saw an increase of 10% or more in the same time frame,” according to the Project as of Tuesday evening.
