(LOS ANGELES) — Leave it to Tyra Banks to find a fashionable solution to a modern problem.  Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is highly recommended that people wear a face mask in public, but that comes at the price of hiding their smiles.

Tyra was Thursday’s guest on The Drew Barrymore Show and helpfully reminded people they have a powerful tool at their disposal — “smizing.”

Smizing, an expression-enhancing trick the America’s Next Top Model creator developed, is about being able to convey emotion using just the eyes while keeping the mouth completely neutral.

“How many times have you been, like, just out and about walking and — you have on your mask — and you think that someone is being really mean to you or rude?  It’s not that they are, it’s just that they’re smiling with their mouth and not with their eyes,” Banks explained.  “So they just look like… evil.”

So, in order to express happiness or warmth even with a mask on, the former supermodel instructed that people need to reach deep and find “something that delights you.”

For Barrymore, she revealed that her greatest joys in life are her daughters — Olive, seven, and Frankie, six — and Tyra was more than happy to work with that for smizing bootcamp.

Coaching Barrymore to channel all the pride she has for daughters through her eyes, the DWTS host encouraged, “It’s important to use these muscles” and convey that energy.

“Now, a smize doesn’t just mean ‘I’m fierce,'” added Banks, noting how she never “thought in a million years” that her trick would take on a whole new level of importance.  “A smize means, ‘Thank you.’ Or, ‘You go first.’ Or, ‘I’m going to be here for you during this difficult time that you are going through right now.'”
